Alfen and HybriX Energy have signed an agreement for two large-scale battery storage projects in Belgium. Both projects have a capacity of 35 megawatts and a storage duration of 4 hours.
The projects will be realized in Geel and Massenhoven. The Volta and Franklin projects will be connected to the Belgian 150-kilovolt transmission grid operated by Elia.
30 containers
Each project consists of 30 containers equipped with Alfen’s TheBattery Elements technology. Construction is planned for mid-2026, with commissioning expected by the end of 2027. The systems will be delivered as turnkey solutions, meaning Alfen will handle the complete project, including installation, commissioning and grid compliance testing. In addition, a multi-year monitoring and service contract will follow.
The projects have been awarded under Elia’s Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM). HybriX Energy can deploy the energy storage systems across various energy and flexibility markets.
“The Volta and Franklin projects represent an important step in strengthening our presence in the rapidly growing battery storage sector in Belgium,” said Kevin Lammertyn and Stijn Heyselberghs, co-founders of HybriX Energy. “The signing of these contracts reflects the confidence we have in Alfen following an extensive market analysis.”
